Bart Ruth

Bart Ruth is a member of the 25 x '25 National Steering Committee. Bart served as president of the American Soybean Association (ASA) in 2001-2002 and spent two months in Europe in the fall of 2005 representing American Agriculture as an Eisenhower Fellow. He led ASA's policy efforts during development of the 2002 Farm Bill and currently chairs ASA's Farm Bill Task Force working on the 2007 Farm Bill. Bart's policy travels on behalf of American farmers have led him to Australia, Brazil, Southeast Asia, Central America, Mexico and Central and Western Europe. Bart farms near Rising City, Nebraska, and raises 1600 acres of no-till crops. Bart served 12 years on the Nebraska Soybean Association Board prior to his nine years of ASA Board service.

Charlie Coffee

Presentation: Biomass and Waste Fuels for Steam Generation

Charlie Coffee has been with Hurst Boiler and Welding Co., Inc., Coolidge, Georgia, for 28 years. As vice president of sales he has been involved in the installation of hundreds of wood-residue-fired steam plants. His early involvement included design, fabrication, installation, and start-up, but most of his time is now spent traveling and developing projects to include estimating cost, justification, equipment design, and site layout. His projects often include wood fuel receiving, screening, and storage systems, as well as the boiler. Presently, Charlie has steam plants under construction for Carolina Soya in Estill, South Carolina, to burn wood fuel supplemented with glycerin, and another for the Savannah River National Laboratory. Savannah River's project will use whole tree chips harvested from the site's own forests and includes the fuel receiving and storage system.

Gary List

Presentation: Trans Fat Solutions

Gary List is a lead scientist at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research in Peoria, Illinois where he has conducted research on edible fats and oils since 1963. He is the author of over 280 technical publications, abstracts, and book chapters including three revisions of the standard fats and oils textbook, Bailey's Industrial Oil and Fat Products. He has made over 100 presentations at national/international scientific meetings and serves on the editorial boards of three journals. He is a member of AOCS, ACS, IFT, AACC, AAIC, DGF SCI and European Federation of Lipids. He is a Fellow in the American Oil Chemists' Society and is the recipient of the AOCS Bailey Medal and the IFT Chang Award for Lipid/Flavor Science.

Brent Kooiman

Brent Kooiman is a senior project engineer and team lead with Interstates Engineering, Inc., in Sioux Center, Iowa. He is a graduate of Dordt College in Sioux Center, where he earned his electrical engineering degree. Brent has been with Interstates since 1998. As senior project engineer, Brent is responsible for all aspects of projects from the proposal stage to completion. As team lead, Brent acts as a client sponsor, technical advisor and leader, and assists in developing and mentoring his team members. Brent is registered as a professional engineer in Iowa, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Arkansas.

Bernie Saggau

Bernie Saggau was appointed assistant executive director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association October 14, 1963, and was appointed to the position of executive director, September 9, 1967, a position he held until his retirement, January 1, 2005. Bernie's background includes being a teacher, coach, principal, and business man. He is past president of the National Federation of State High School Associations. He was the chairperson for the National Basketball Rules Committee for eight years and served on the Football Rules Committee for 25 years. He served on the United States Olympic House of Delegates Committee. Bernie was a recipient of the National High School Coaches Distinguished Award. He currently is a trustee of Buena Vista University. As a hobby, Bernie refereed high school and college basketball and football for 30 years. Bernie's vision, the signature of his career, was a $13 million dollar, 26,000 square foot Hall of Pride Building, which officially opened February 2005, Des Moines, Iowa.

William Wright

Presentation: BP Accident Investigation

William E. Wright was appointed by President George W. Bush to the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board in September 2006. Immediately prior to his appointment to the Board, he served for five years as chairman of the Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board. During this period, he worked closely with the assistant secretary of the Army for Environment Safety and Occupational Health and with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency to safely eliminate various chemical stockpiles. William served in the Navy's Special Operations Explosive Ordnance Disposal community including a major command tour as commander, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group ONE. He retired as a captain after having served 30 years in the United States Navy. He earned his bachelor's degree and MBA from the University of Puget Sound. He also earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.

David Ailor

Presentation: Food Safety and Security Legislation

David Ailor has directed the National Oilseed Processors Association's (NOPA) regulatory affairs activities since October 1989. As vice president of Regulatory Affairs, he is responsible for directing the regulatory and legislative activities of NOPA on issues related to the Clean Air Act; Clean Water Act; Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act; Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act; Oil Pollution Act of 1990; Resource Conservation and Recovery Act; Toxic Substances Control Act; Occupational Safety and Health Act; and, the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Responsibilities include formulating policy positions; developing regulatory responses; analyzing regulations/legislation; providing "early warning" on pending legislation and regulatory issues; directing lobbyists and outside counsel in support of same; and, working with relevant regulatory agencies to ensure the reasonableness of regulations being developed. David is a registered Professional Engineer, holds an M.S.C.E. degree from Purdue University and a B.S.C.E. degree from North Carolina State University.

Howard Shepherd

Presentation: Bio-Terrorism Act and Tracking Commodities thru the Processing Facility

Howard E. Shepherd is the program coordinator of the Iowa Grain Quality Initiative (IGQI) at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He coordinates IGQI project responsibilities within the initiative participating academic staff, and business, organization, and association participants on projects that enhance grain quality and food safety. As program coordinator, he has developed a training module for FDA Bioterrorism Registration and Recordkeeping and also manages the IGQI website. He is a United States Army officer team leader and advisor, and is also a member of the Agribusiness Association of Iowa, GEAPS, Ag Cooperative Safety Directors of Iowa, American Society of Agronomy, and Gamma Sigma Delta.

Hal Wrigley

Presentation: Producing High Quality Biodiesel

Hal Wrigley is a graduate of The University of Pittsburgh where he majored in Chemistry and Biochemistry. He received his degree in Oral Surgery and Anesthesiology in 1967. He served in the U.S. Army and was a decorated captain in the Green Berets in Vietnam from 1969-1971. Hal developed/invented the Robo Grip pliers for Craftsman Tools (Sears) and holds numerous patents. He was a division president for Emerson Electric Co. from 1994-2004 and also did his research at CMU's Advanced Fuel Technology Center. He is currently president of Knightsbridge Biofuels (formerly Knightsbridge Petroleum) and also president of Ecogy Biofuels. He serves on two University boards: University of Pittsburgh's School of Bioengineering; and Penn State University's School of Information Science and Technology.

The Desmet Ballestra group is the world leader in the supply of biodiesel plants, with approximately 70 plants presently in design, construction and operation. Jim has been in the oils and fats related operations and business sector for 30 years, having joined the Desmet Ballestra group in 2004. He has a bachelor's degree and post graduate course work. He presently serves on the board of the AOCS Processing Division and has been a loyal participant in IOMSA meetings and Texas A&M Short courses.

Tim Kemper

Tim Kemper is president and CEO of Desmet Ballestra North America located in Atlanta, Georgia. The Desmet Ballestra group is the world leader in the supply of biodiesel plants, with approximately 70 plants presently in design, construction and operation. Tim has been in the oils and fats related business sector for 25 years, having joined the Desmet Ballestra group in 1999. He has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, an MBA, is a licensed professional engineer, and is an inventor on six U.S. patents. He presently serves on the technical committee of NFPA-36 Solvent Extraction Plants, the Governing Board of the American Oil Chemists' Society, and has been a loyal participant in IOMSA meetings and Texas A&M Short courses over the past 20 years.

Greg Waranica

Greg Waranica is the sales manager, Oils & Fats for Crown Iron Works located in Minneapolis , Minnesota . Greg has a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and an MBA, and has been involved in the vegetable oil processing industry since 1990. Greg joined Crown in 2004 after seven years with Westfalia Separator. Crown is the leading designer and equipment supplier of large capacity biodiesel plants in the U.S.
